The workshop on
‘From Sustainable Farming Systems to Sustainable Landscape
– local and science knowledge for Food Security within Rural
Development’
Background and
Objectives
Widespread and
severe household food insecurity occurs in many farming
systems in the Tropics as well as in Vietnam and this is
expected to remain as a major concern during the coming
decades. Food insecurity and poverty are interrelated, and
are more prevalent and severe in rural areas than in urban
areas. Therefore food security is one important goal within
a rural development context. The food security of
smallholders includes income security with market
integration and also with nutrition security.
The challenge for improving farmers’ food security in a
changing world is how to develop sustainable land use, were
production and environmental protection go hand in hand.
Involving multi-stakeholders and
drawing upon their perspectives and knowledge is considered
essential in the development of sustainable land use.
Farmers’ knowledge of landscape relationships and their
perceptions of an underlying logic play an important role in
their management decisions. A range of methods and
approaches by which knowledge from communities can be
combined with scientific knowledge for the development of
sustainable land use practices at farm and landscape levels
has been developed by various projects in Vietnam and in
Southeast Asian region. These projects aim at food security
for local people within the context of Rural Development and
Environment Protection.
The objectives of
this workshop are:
-
To gain a
common understanding on Food Security approach within
the Rural Development context.
-
To share
research results, including methods, approaches and case
studies from various projects within the university
network ‘Sustainable Rural Development and Environment –
RDViet’, and the project
Sustainable Land Use for the Uplands of Vietnam and Laos
– Science and Local Knowledge for Food Security – LUSLOF
project. The LUSLOF is a collaborative research project
between the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF)
Southeast Asia, the National Institute for Soils and
Fertilizers (NISF) in Vietnam, the National Agriculture
and Forestry Institute (NAFRI) of Laos, and the
Department of Soil Sciences, the Swedish University of
Agricultural Sciences (SLU), for the period 2002-2005.
-
To discuss the
possibility of scaling up of the methods developed in
the short-term - as well as strategic research in the
field of Rural Development.
-
To
increase awareness among a wide audience on the dual
benefits of combining local and science knowledge –
production and environmental protection.
The workshop is co-organized by the
Sida/SAREC-funded Project RDViet and the Rockefeller
Foundation (RF) funded project LUSLOF.
